North Shore youth looking to help others at home or abroad can find out how at an event in West Vancouver next week.
HEY Day, organized by West Vancouver high school students and MP John Weston, will showcase local and international volunteer opportunities aimed at young people.
It will take place May 28 at Park Royal Shopping Center.
The event, short for Helping Every Youth Day, is intended to inspire youth to get involved, said Yun Kang, 18, a representative of West Vancouver's Youth Volunteer Organizational Committee.
"By getting involved and being informed . . . and by actually being active about it, I believe everyone -- all the youth of the North Shore -- can help others and also help themselves," said Kang.
About 15 organizations from Canada and the United States will set up booths in the south atrium of the mall to highlight the available opportunities.
There will be guest speakers from some of the groups, including Carrie Hessler-Radelet, the deputy director of the American Peace Corps.
"We thought it would be nice if we could arrange all these organizations together at a big place where all the youth can come and say: 'Hey, that's a really nice organization I would love to volunteer there,'" said Kang.
Kang said she had a difficult time trying to find volunteer opportunities when she immigrated to Canada two years ago, so she wanted to be involved in creating an event that could help remedy that.
Information booths will be up and running from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Guest speakers will be presenting starting at 6 p.m.
