The Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in North America on June 2, 1967.

The Beatles released their album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, in North America on June 2, 1967, a week after it was launched in the U.K. Recording sessions began on Nov. 24, 1966 in Abbey Road, Studio Two, with the band working on John Lennon’s song “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Engineer Geoff Emerick estimates they spent 55 hours in the studio recording the Lennon tune alone with more than 700 hours spent on the entire album. When their label EMI needed a single from the band in February, 1967 The Beatles gave them “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane” which were both originally intended to be released on Sgt. Pepper.  The album had many firsts, including lyrics printed on the cover and the songs on the tape master were made without spaces between tracks – crossfades blended songs together creating the impression of a continuous live performance. In 1967 mono mixes were still the standard for pop recordings and the band spent almost the entire recording process working with producer George Martin and Emerick on two four-track tape machines to create a  monaural recording. Near the end of the sessions EMI also requested a stereo mix and they hastily put one together on a tight deadline but the mono version is the bible, says Emerick. Production was completed on April 21, 1967 with the recording of random noises and voices that were included on the run-out groove.
