Cellist Peggy Lee's composition “Out on a Limb” (featuring a trumpet solo from Capilano University's Brad Turner) is from her new album, Echo Painting, released on Vancouver’s Songlines Recordings on May 18. Citing Carla Bley and Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra as influences for the music, Lee says the idea was “to bring together some of my longstanding band members with some of the younger players that I had recently begun to collaborate with. I wasn’t thinking about specific instruments really, just the players that I was excited about working with. The name to me simply speaks of our efforts to make sense of our world through artistic practice… And of course there are echoes of much of the music that has been meaningful to me over the years.”

Lee will bring Echo Painting to this year’s TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival on Monday, June 25 at 9:30 p.m. at The Ironworks as part of the Innovation Series of concerts. Her band will include Brad Turner - trumpet, John Bentley -  tenor/soprano saxophone, Dylan van der Schyff - drums, James Meger - bass, Cole Schmidt - guitar, John Paton - tenor sax, Meredith Bates - violin, Roderick Murray - trombone, Bradshaw Pack - pedal steel guitar.
