Off the Cuff Top 10 Playlist

A weekly gleaner of Internet sources and other media
Oshima
Turner Classic Movies channel (TCM) broadcasts two films by Japanese filmmaker Nagisa Oshima back to back on Saturday, June 10, beginning with Cruel Story of Youth (1960) at 11 p.m. followed by Boy (1969) at 1 a.m. Influenced by Western pop culture, but pushing everything conceptually off the scale, Oshima’s Cruel Story of Youth has been compared to Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause and Jean-Luc Godard’s early nouvelle vague masterpieces like À bout de souffle, Bande à part and Pierrot le fou. As Godard was doing his thing in Paris, Oshima was picking up the vibe and running it through his own viewfinder in Tokyo. Derek Malcolm of The Guardian chose Boy as one of his top 100 films of all time. Oshima shot the work throughout Japan on a low budget with a 15-person crew (tcm.com).
