North Van designer displays new work in grad exhibit

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is currently hosting an exhibition of more than 300 works in The Show from this year’s Design, Media and Visual Arts graduates highlighting student creativity and innovation.

North Vancouver’s Ali Alamzadeh is graduating this year with a major in industrial design.

A good deal of his time at Emily Carr was spent researching recycled newsprint as a viable resource in its own right and in combination with other materials.

Alamzadeh has several designs in The Show including the largest objects he has made to date – a coffee table and stool.

“All of the parts are made of upcycled wood, paper and newspaper,” he says. “For the newspaper and paper portion of each piece, glue was applied to each layer and then laminated with a press and then in some cases attached to wood pieces and machined using a CNC router at the same time.

“The smaller items are desk accessories for office or home spaces to act as storage or a container for objects in different sizes, such as jewelry, pens and stationery.”

The coffee table and stool were made entirely from upcycled paper and newspaper.

All of the pieces seen in The Show were made by hand and Alamzadeh says the next step in his ongoing research is to explore automation processes.
