Amy Winehouse — Lioness: Hidden Treasures (Island)

Rating: 7 (out of 10)

This posthumous collection of studio outtakes, demos and other stops and starts takes nothing away from the Amy Winehouse legend. Like Billie Holiday, Winehouse managed to insert her personality into whatever music she was doing no matter what the rest of her day was like.

Lioness: Hidden Treasures, featuring 12 tracks recorded as early as 2002, was released last December. The music has a little bit of everything including a rock steady take on Ruby & the Romantics’ 1963 hit “Our Day Will Come,” a soulful reading of Carole King’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and self-penned unreleased songs such as “Between the Cheats” with Winehouse written all over them.

The CD cover was shot by Vancouver’s Bryan Adams who did several photograph sessions with the iconic UK singer over the past decade.

Amy Winehouse was one of a kind and Lioness: Hidden Treasures is a fascinating addition to the legend.
