Bitcoin for your thoughts?

The West Vancouver Memorial Library is preparing to host an information session on cryptocurrencies and blockchains at Welsh Hall West Wednesday at 6 p.m.

While Bitcoin may seem the most intriguing, there may be “much bigger implications” in the technology underlying Bitcoin and its ability to preserve records, according to UBC PhD candidate Darra Hofman.

Blockchains can make records“democratic and transparent” by making the record-keeping technology “accessible, writable and reachable” by everyone, Hofman said.

As opposed to a database which preserves security by restricting access, blockchains would allow information to be completely accessible.

“Theoretically you can let anyone have access to the database and still keep the records secure.”
