District of North Vancouver students are going to walk and roll next week, and party at the end of May.
In an effort to get people out of cars and onto their feet, the district is encouraging elementary students to submit photos of themselves walking, biking or scootering to school to dnv.org/property-development/walk-and-roll-school-challenge from May 22 to 25. Students will be asked to identify their school; however, no personal data will be collected.
At the end of the Walk and Roll Challenge, schools with the highest participation rates (highest percentage of their total student population) will win one of four prizes.
The first-place school will get a visit on May 29 from Mayor Richard Walton who will present the students with the Walk and Roll Trophy, which will be displayed until the next challenge in 2019.
There will also be natural fruit juice popsicles for the entire school population at lunchtime or recess, along with a cheque presentation for $1,500 to the winning school’s parent advisory council to be put towards an active transportation initiative at their school.
The second-place school will win $1,000, and the third and fourth place schools will win $500 each, to be used by their PACs for an active transportation project.
Students who don’t live close to their schools are encouraged to participate by getting dropped off a few blocks away and walking, cycling or scootering the rest of the way.
“The Walk and Roll School Challenge promotes a healthy, active lifestyle for students and inspires the next generation to consider active transportation the norm and not the exception,” states a district press release.
