The North Shore leg of this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Fest is entering into the long weekend with a highly anticipated performance by Keith Bennett and Miles Black who are paying homage to harmonica greats Jean-Baptiste “Toots” Thielemans and Stevie Wonder in a special performance at Presentation House Theatre tonight at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show of harmonica-heavy jazz standards and vocal classics range from $20 to $22.

A really, really big ship has pulled into town – and you’re invited to check it out. The massive Canadian frigate HMCS Calgary will be anchoring at the Lonsdale pier this Canada Day long weekend with free public tours being offered tomorrow and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s recommended that visitors wear appropriate footwear and expect security checks before boarding the military vessel.

Speaking of Canada Day, there’s a whole host of locales to check out this weekend in order to show off your red and white pride. In West Vancouver, head to John Lawson Park where the municipality is hosting a Canada Day celebration July 1. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic, or check out a selection of local food vendors, while watching live entertainment, including a Kids' zone and plenty of live music. Fireworks start at 10:30 p.m.

In North Vancouver, head on down to Waterfront Park where, for the 30th year in a row, the Lions Gate Rotary Club is hosting a family-focused Canada Day celebration from noon to 4 p.m. An array of local performers, multicultural food, balloon artists, a fire juggler, climbing wall, bouncy castles, and much more await those looking to celebrate Canada Day with a bang, with all proceeds going to support North Shore charities. Also, don’t forget to grab a free cupcake while you’re there!

But what about parades? Not to fear: Celebrate North Shore Society and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 118 are hosting this year’s North Shore Canada Day Parade, which commences at 10 a.m. sharp on Sunday at 13th Street and Grand Boulevard before proceeding west on 13th Street to Lonsdale Avenue and then turning north on Lonsdale. Make sure to get there early in order to snag a good view of the festivities. Registration is still open for those hoping to be in the parade.
